Introduction to Story Sets

Story setsare a collection of stories specifically selected and designed to teach biblical principles. These may be…

  • A set of chronological stories, which reveal the story of God as He reveals Himself to mankind (which may last as long as a year).   The panorama view of Scripture explores larger themes of Scripture, such as redemption, salvation, sin, and the purposes of God. These story sets cover the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, and provide disciples with an overview of God’s word.
  • Stories focused on a specific portion of the Bible, such as Christ in the Gospels or the disciples/early church in the book of Acts.
  • Stories gathered around a theme or topic (usually 6-8 weeks)
  • Stories that follow a biblical character throughout their life as they strive to follow God.

Each story set provided includes a brief description of the purpose of the stories in the set and the target audience.  There is an outline of the stories by title and biblical reference. Also included is a sample curriculum outline you can use in your groups to tell the stories and facilitate discussion. You may adapt this outline or use it to develop your own story sets.

Shorter story sets allow for several advantages in the house church/small group setting. In between each set, the group can take some time for other types of community building.  The pause between story sets allows time for other types of teaching, time to play and fellowship together, provides a natural opportunity for new members to join an existing group or for the group to serve together in ministry. This is helpful to the dynamics of the group and to the effectiveness in which principles discussed within the group can be lived out in real life.

The Bible says that “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…” It also says “It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”  The Word of God revealed by the Spirit of God is really enough to accomplish the mission of God. Let the Holy Spirit remind you of God’s Word and develop story sets that directly relate to the needs of your community. Be creative and enjoy the discovery of God’s truths in the stories of scripture!
